Combined 150+ Years Of Trusted Care

Dr. Janie Barnett

Dr. Janie P. Barnett began her career at the New York League for the Hard of Hearing (now Center for Hearing and Communication), where she gave care to patients of all ages. During those years, she was certified in the verbotonal method of aural rehabilitation and was involved in a special project using this method to help hearing-impaired children improve their speech articulation.

Dr. Barnett has been a teacher to graduate-level students enrolled in the audiology practicum course at the City College of New York (CUNY). She served as audiological consultant to Dr. Paul E. Hammerschlag, NYU Medical Center neurotologist, for more than 30 years, where her work consisted of diagnostic testing for audio-vestibular (hearing and balance) disorders. Continuing her love for children, she also specializes in treating kids with craniofacial abnormalities, some of whom are now her adult patients. She has been a guest lecturer at educational symposiums on the subject of treating hearing loss in people with craniofacial differences.

With a dedication to ongoing education, Dr. Barnett has participated as audiologist in three National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies — with Dr. Hammerschlag as Principal Investigator — on sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED), and Meniere’s disease.

While her schedule is incredibly full, she finds time for philanthropic work, which includes annual mission trips to Nicaragua with Mayflower Medical Outreach. Its mission is to provide ENT and audiology services to the people of Jinotega in Northern Nicaragua.

In private practice, she continues to serve adults and children with hearing impairment and tinnitus by providing aural rehabilitation services and hearing aids in a caring and supportive manner. She hopes to restore the gift of sound to as many people as possible.
