If you have ever had to search for hearing aids, I am sure that you have come across the name of Siemens Artis. Siemens Artis are market leaders in the realm of hearing aids. In fact, they sell about 20% of all deaf aids sold worldwide, so you can see that they are a company to take seriously.

Siemens Artis has often been at the very vanguard of deaf aid technology. Their latest innovation is E2E wireless technology, which means that if you wear two deaf aids, you only have to make alterations to one of them and the settings will be transmitted to the other one automatically. Anyone who has worn two hearing aids at the same time will understand what a godsend this is.

The ear pieces still facility independently in E2E, but they can be programmed in unison. Their directionality is also regulated from one ear piece, so that you do not have one ear listening forward and the other listening backwards.

The Siemens Artis 2 is also a smart device, which means that it will store your most used settings and try to predict what you require. The longer you use it, the more accurate this learning process should get. This capability is known as DataLearning. It also has something called DataLogging which will store data that will come in very useful to your audiologist when you next go for a fitting.

The Siemens Artis has a sizable number of channels, which allows it to be programmed to eliminate everyday background sounds, while emphasizing speech or music. The Artis 2 is so cutting edge that it can store millions of bits of data to be able to discriminate between sounds worth listening to and background noise. This facility is very helpful for certain situations like walking on a windy beach to working in a noisy factory.

The facility to cut out the wind noise actually has a label and is called eWindscreen. A similar function regulates feedback, which is a common complaint about cheaper or older hearing aids. An inventive function is that a feature called Autophone switches on automatically whenever you lift a cell phone to your ear and switches off again as you lower the phone. The Artis 2 lets you know it has switched functions by making a discreet beep.

The Artis 2 comes in two varieties: the in the ear device and the behind the ear device. The Artis BTE is really quite small and is known as Artis Life. It was designed with those in mind that find it uncomfortable to wear something similar to an earplug all day long

It is clear that picking a hearing aid is not an easy decision and definitely not one that anyone should make without first consulting the advice of their doctor or / and local society for the deaf, not least because these instruments are very expensive.

If you are unlucky enough to buy one that is not suitable for you, you are in a tight fix because some hearing aids cost thousands of dollars. Having said that, the ultimate choice is yours alone but Siemens devices probably ought to be on your short list.

Uncle Ned’s remarks are usually off the mark, but people just say it’s senility. Nodding and smiling are his other contributions. Grandma has the talent of hearing only what she likes. One can never get a word in when Aunt Clara joins a conversation. Does this hit a button? Such situations can try anyone’s patience, but senility may not even be the primary cause. The alternate explanation put forward by audiologists is that Uncle Ned, Grandma, and Aunt Clara all suffer from loss of hearing. Professionals, called audiologists, work with those with hearing loss, most of whom are the elderly, in order to adequately evaluate and address specific problems.

Even crowds, background noises, and poor acoustics become troublesome for people with hearing problems. Their hearing is optimized, as long as they are not sick or tired and can see the speakers. They lose the ability to hear certain sounds but may be able to hear soft conversation. He may be able to perceive sounds but not comprehend the whole conversation.

The audiologist can distinguish those who can benefit from hearing aids, for whom they begin a hearing aid evaluation. The process allows the client to try on different brands and models to see which fits best. The most common problem among the elderly is nerve damage, which used to be incurable. With leaps in hearing aid technology, almost everyone can benefit.

Lives have improved with hearing aids, but there are those who are still holding out. Such a visible sign of damage is avoided by many others.

Some may not be able to stretch their budgets to buy a hearing aid. Neither Medicare nor health insurance can be depended on to shoulder the cost, which is at least $300. Luckily, clients can pay $15 a month towards full purchase through a private, national lease purchase plan. With the help of counseling sessions with audiologists, clients can more easily get re-acquainted with the world of sound.

There are limits to the help of hearing aids. The services of the Center for Audiology include both counseling for clients and educational sessions for families.

The advice below eases communication for clients and their families. When conversing with a person suffering from hearing loss, one should not shout, especially if the victim is wearing a hearing aid. A hearing aid increases the volume of all sounds, even a shout, which may cause pain. People should stop being embarrassed about needing hearing aids. Hearing aids are nothing to be ashamed of and should be perceived as helping people regain fuller lives.

It was said by a National Institute of Health panel that the statistics of babies that are not seen to have hearing disabilities are more than half of that are born and it is only noticed when they are about two years at which time it would have become permanent. A new technology has now surfaced making it possible for the detection of hearing problems on new born and the NIH committee advocated the use of this. This new plan was shared with healthcare workers who take care of children who suffer from hearing impairments and was in turn accepted very well. Around one baby in every 1,000 born in the United States show signs of deafness says the committee by the National Institute of Health. Due to the current practice that requires doctors to check infants who have a higher risk of getting hearing impairments less than half of the cases are seen early on. For the chairman of the committee and a professor at Loyola University in Chicago if there is no diagnosis for a child with hearing problems by the time he or she is three years of age then the permanent damaged is done to his or her speech and language abilities.

The professor further stated that around two and one half years old is the average age a child should be screen for hearing problems however in the future they plan to lower the age to about 6 months. Early identification of hearing loss is now possible because of new instruments that can measure the hearing acuity of new born. Relatively a new instrument that will sense for otoacoustic emissions in the baby just right after being born is now possible and is greatly advocated.

A device will transmit clicking sounds to the inner ear where it will detect an echo like response and this is what the test involves. The determination of hearing problems in the inner ear will be done by a computer who will check the response. In order to really verify the presence of hearing deficiencies a secondary test will be done which will now use the system named auditory brainstem responses. The confirming test will call of sensors to be placed on the head of the infant while a clicking sound is still made. Hearing the sound normally, the sensors will register a particularly brain wave pattern.

In line with this, the two tests are able to analyze the responses to the sound. Since the second more is a bit more complicated it will cost more about $75 to $125 while the first is only about $25. Spending about $150 million to $200 million for new born to be tested right after they are born is not so much expense then the billion the nation would spend if this is not implemented.

A child whose hearing loss is not detected until age 3 or later loses about $400,000 to $800,000 in lifetime earnings because of a reduced ability to use language. Studies have shown that high school graduates, whose hearing loss was not detected early on, usually have a fourth to seventh grade level reading skills. There will really be a difference when hearing loss will be seen early as children can learn how to live in a normal environment and school as opposed to going to a specialized school. Being able to see hearing problems earlier will grant the country more savings.

Deafness in one ear caused this woman to find normalcy in the mumblings she would often hear. The idea to turn to professional help only came to her when she realized that she could barely understand what others said. She wound up being among the first to enroll at the program for mouth lip reading conducted by the Central Institute for the Deaf. For those who are living active lives and are dealing with age related hearing impairments, this program would definitely meet their needs.

As you age, you lose the ability to translate sound that a person can still hear, but they can’t understand what others are saying, said an audiologist who helps run the lip reading program. The program became a means of preventive maintenance for the lady executive. Communicating through speaking is crucial to the careers of a lot of people. To provide more one on one attention, each one hour class for the week in a span of four weeks will have a maximum of four students.

Half of the class time is devoted to video watching as a means of enhancing lip reading skills. The expressionless woman in the video mouths sentences which they must try to figure out. Oftentimes, they imitate the woman’s mouth as she gives the words. In case students really don’t know the answer, they can opt to have the sentence rephrased or ask for a clue. These are aids in helping you read lips.

Presbycusis happens because the inner ear is not able to translate particular sounds. High pitched sounds are usually the first that people lose. Most likely, they would complain about not hearing what is being said on TV and start turning up the volume. According to her, a hearing aid wouldn’t much benefit a person with presbycusis.

It becomes especially trouble in situations where there is a lot of background noise, such as at parties or at the movies. Some people begin isolating themselves and become depressed, feeling they can’t compete with younger colleagues.

We are ending up with a noise filled society. Even young ones are not spared from hearing loss because of the constant amount of noise surround us. Over 25 million Americans suffer some kind of hearing impairment, making it the country’s number one disability. Hearing loss becomes permanent for one of every four adults who reach the age of 66.

The institute hopes the word of mouth program will help people lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Focused communication training has made people feel that they are young and sharp again. Participants in the program, which started in 1998, are encouraged to practice lip reading with friends, family and coworkers. Some even watch TV without turning up the volume.

Four weeks of training would not be enough to produce great lip reader. They will be motivated by the difficulty of lip reading to turn also to other ways of aid for their hearing problems. The remaining half of the class time is devoted to hearing improvement strategies.

An executive could, for example, make reservations for a front row seat in a seminar he plans to attend. The real reason for why it’s reserved will not be known. Eventually, it is the wish of these institutes to help people all over the country and even provide an intensive weekend session.

If your eyesight is weakening, you get glasses. If we have a tooth ache, we head for an appointment with the dentist. If you break a bone, you go see a doctor to have it put in a cast.

However, if our hearing decreases as we age, all we do is turn the volume up on the television so much that nothing else can be heard and then go on with our life as though nothing is the matter. What is the reason behind refusing to get hearing aids? The National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders state that 28 million people have some level of hearing loss that affect their daily life.

Each hearing loss is unique, but there is a vast array of amazing technology available to meet the needs of every hearing impaired individual. Everything has changed in recent years as it relates to hearing aids. They now utilize digital technology, just as computers, televisions, and radios. This has enhanced reliability and sound quality, all in a smaller package. No more “clunky” old hearing aids that remind you of your grandfather.

Audiologist are now able to adjust the a hearing aid, because the new digital ones use state of the art microphones, receivers, batteries and a computer chips. You can expect the newest versions of hearing aids to be smaller and more discreet. Plus, they can be programmed in a way to meet your unique hearing impairment.

No two people experience hearing loss in the same way. While some struggle with high frequencies, others fight to hear low frequencies. It is the fact that certain frequencies can’t be heard that make holding a conversation so difficult. A person misses the vowel sounds if they can’t hear low frequencies and misses consonants if they struggle with the high ones. This forces them to have to fill in the missing sounds.

For many people it’s the volume of the sound that causes them problems. which is often the culprit behind the constant requests to “speak louder” or to “turn up the volume.”

An audiologist can perform a hearing test to determine what adjustments need to be made to a hearing aid. Yearly hearing tests should be received by anyone with a hearing impairment, even if it is a very slight hearing loss. Hearing experts have three different levels of educations. Otolaryngologists, also known as ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors, go through 8 years of education and training. They are able to treat hearing impairments that are the result of medical conditions.

Audiologist are usually only required to have a master’s degree and have to obtain a license to practice from the state. You also have hearing aid dispensers who must be certified by the state, but do not have the level of education an audiologist has. Often these professionals are more like sales people who try to sell hearing aids manufactured by a specific company. Remember, they need a state certification, but do not require as much education as an audiologist.

At this point there are four kinds of hearing aids. The ones referred to as “completely in the canal” are the smallest and almost invisible. These of course are usually the most expensive, they are also not as effective for severe loss of hearing.

The next group are the “in the canal” devices. These hearing instruments are slightly larger then the ones just discussed, but they still fit a ways into the ear canal. They need a bigger battery and will help people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

The devices that are visible from the outside are called “in the ear” and encompass a much wider range of hearing loss problems. The next size are the “behind the ear” hearing aids which are based in a case that sits behind the ear. These need a bigger battery and are made to amplify sounds more than the smaller devices. This will help a person with higher levels of hearing loss. You can still obtain an analog hearing aid at small price, but you have to understand that they do not have the advanced technology of the newer versions.

Statistics now show some 28 million Americans, in all age groups, have hearing loss problems. Here are some other things you should know: When you experience hearing loss, it’s usually due to aging, blockage in the ear, or disease. A hearing aid can assist about 95% of all hearing loss cases.

Quite notable is the fact that hearing loss among younger people is increasing at an alarming rate. Case in point. There was a 17 percent increase of hearing impairment among 18 to 44 year-olds from 1971 to 1990. Temporary hearing loss is usually caused by otitis media. Some 70 percent of both young children and infants are affect with this particular ear infection.

Ever experienced hearing a sound that made you feel irritated and gave you a bad headache? Then that is what we call as noise. Any sound that is not pleasing is called noise. If this noise or noises are already too loud resulting to disturbance in the balance of the environment, then it is considered now as noise pollution. Although it is just some noise, these noises can also cause bad effects in our health. Read along and find the causes of noise pollution and its possible effects.

In measuring sound, we use decibel (dB). We use such measurement to identify how intense the sound is. The eardrum gets damaged if exposed to 180 decibels and beyond. However, 85 decibels sound can already cause problem with the eardrum if one is constantly exposed to it. Remember that in every 10 decibels increase in a sound is equal to ten times the strength of the sound.

There are two main sources of noise pollution, namely: indoor and outdoor sources. Loud music and noise made by some electrical appliances belong to indoor source and noise from vehicles and industrial machines are under the outdoor source. Studies shows that outdoor source contribute more to this kind of pollution compared to indoor source, that is why urban places have higher noise pollution compared to rural places.

Constant exposure to noise pollution can be detrimental to one’s health. It has physical and psychological effects on people as well as on animals. People who are always exposed to higher decibels may have problems in hearing, abnormal sleep pattern and high blood pressure. Psychologically, they may also develop aggression, irritability and stress.

Due to increasing noise pollutions, some places resulted to creation of noise pollution laws. These law aims to reduce the noise level of a place by prohibiting loud noises or allowing noises only at certain time of the day.

These are the few of the important facts about noise pollution. Hopefully, this article was able to enlighten you about noise pollution and can encourage you not to contribute to the noises around you.

There was a mother who replied to her son’s question. He considered what he saw by the table beside her to be a miracle. She placed her hearing aid on the table. It was the first time in 15 years of using a hearing aid that his mother heard his voice without any necessary assistance.

They were actually in a cubicle of an acupuncture center at the time where four thin needles were used on the sides of the mother’s neck just by the ears and her jaw. When she was on the medical examining table, the mother had a curious look. Replying to a question, she said she was fine. At the time, they thought that her aid was worn because voices were not raised but they saw it on the table.

Washington was where the center is located and so the duo went all the way from NY after seeing a story in the local paper about how acupuncture, a Chinese method of using fine needles in the body, is used to treat nerve deafness. From being able to prevent pain, acupuncture developed into a treatment that can cure deafness.

No other condition than nerve deafness can make use of cure as a reference. It is possible to give audiometer findings before and after treatment. 35 to 40 percent of people with hearing impairments are affected by nerve deafness and this is the only condition that acupuncture can cure. Caused by diseases and the like, this treatment cannot do anything for other kinds of hearing loss problems.

He does not easily accept patents and is careful in providing inflated claims when it comes to acupuncture, his fascination with the process resulted from his family experiencing acupuncture treatments in Argentina. Achieving 75 to 80 percent improvement requires about eight treatments. The levels of improvement are lessened with age. The 7 to 12 year old children often gained back their full hearing abilities. To boost the effects of acupuncture, a repeat of the process must be done in a year or so.

As the US deputy undersecretary of labor for legislative affairs waited for his tenth treatment the other patients were undergoing treatments of their own. He was a young Montanan who supplied the Administration not only with precise and unemotional reports about the chances for passage of legislation affecting the Labor Department but that pertaining to the mood of Congress as well. From a 1968 virus attack came about the loss of hearing in his left ear. At the beginning of his nerve deafness diagnosis, there were zero chances of recovery. A problem like his could not even be solved with hearing aids.

He accepted his fate and learned to adapt to the loss of hearing by asking people to talk to him on his good ear at his right side. But the hearing loss was distressing in such activities as hunting and there was a nagging fear of deafness in the other ear. At first, he doubted all of the abilities of the acupuncture center. Something as simple as that for a cure is rather outstanding. Anyways he opted to try acupuncture out and his initial audiogram reading came out registering complete deafness in his left ear.

But he was so afraid of the needle part of the treatment that he needed to back out after the first few were inserted. He heard some beeps from the audiogram machine. Managing nine treatments so far, his hearing has improved 70 percent and he will continue to return if he sees further improvement.

Hearing aids in the strictest form of the term have been around for ever. When early man shouted a greeting or a threat from a long way, the listener probably cupped his hands behind his ears in order to better hear what was being said to him. In general, people did not live a long time up to several hundred years ago, especially the poor and the very rich, so being hard of hearing was not the problem that it is today.

People were either born deaf or went deaf through illness. People did not go deaf through being old or through industrial noise because there were no machines. The poor died of hard work and sickness and the rich were assassinated. Scholars and monks were possibly the only classes that lived into old age and scholars were often monks and visa-versa. These people were certainly clever enough to have developed the hearing trumpet from the cupped hand.

But that is all that mankind had for thousands and thousands of years. More of the sound (or vibrating air) was caught by the cupped hand or trumpet (thereby enlarging the outer ear) and channeled into the inner ear. Then, all of a sudden in historical terminology, along came electricity and wiring and circuitry and batteries not much more than a hundred years ago.

Modern hearing devices work on much the same principle. A microphone collects the sound, amplifies it and immediately plays it back through a loudspeaker which is located in or behind the ear. Owing to the level of technology, the early hearing aids were big and unsightly. The battery was the size of a house brick and so was the amplifier. The microphone was large and the speakers were headphones. There was some volume control, but basically, you got what it gave you.

These days hearing devices still work on the same principal, but micro technology has allowed manufacturers to miniaturize the set-up so that all the components fit in one small unit, which is then put in or behind the ear. Most of these hearing aids can be adjusted in some way to suit the wearer’s personal hearing difficulty. This is because not everyone is impaired to the same degree and not everybody has problems with the same frequencies.

Furthermore, the environment you are in can make a lot of difference to the effectiveness of the deaf aid and therefore, modern units permit the wearer to filter out some surrounding noises like wind rush or heavy machinery. There is also much more volume control than before. Volume control can even be set on automatic.

The fundamental form of hearing aid is the analogue device, the same type as was first invented for batteries but much, much smaller. These are usually BTE (behind the ear) units. The next sort is the programmable analogue hearing aid. This device is programmable for use in different situations and is a huge advance on the simple analogue process.

The last type is the modern digital hearing aid. It is also the most effective and the most costly. Its circuitry is capable of Digital Sound Processing or DSP. These digital aids use many millions of sound codes to identify frequencies and then either filter them out or amplify them. The difference is like going from vinyl records to CD’s.
